Tyler was born in Milwaukee on January 20th, 2000. He attended Whitnall High School in Greenfield, Wisconsin where he played basketball and committed to the University of Wisconsin before his junior year. The coach of the University of Kentucky came to Tyler's game which later caused Tyler to uncommit to Wisco and commit to Kentucky instead.

Tyler attended Kentucky for one season (2018-2019) and was awarded Southeastern Conference Rookie of the Year by Associated Press. Tyler declared for the draft after his season and was drafted to the Miami Heat 1st round, 13th pick.

Tyler was the first player in NBA history born in the 2000s to appear in an NBA Conference Finals game the later named 2019-20 NBA All-Rookie Second Team. During his time in the NBA so far, he has also been awarded NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 2022 and NBA All-Star in 2025.
